Links on the page that lead to pages which no longer exist and return a 404.
Why it matters
They dead-end a visitor mid-journey, and they waste the crawl budget search engines allocate to your site. They accumulate silently whenever a page is renamed.
How to fix it, step by step
Quick fix — usually under ten minutes, no developer needed.
- 1Run a link check — Search Console reports 404s under Pages, and free crawlers list them all.
- 2For each: point it at the correct page if one exists.
- 3If the page is genuinely gone, redirect the old address to the closest equivalent, not to the homepage.
- 4In WordPress, a redirection plugin manages this without editing server configuration.
How to know it worked
Re-crawl and confirm no 404s remain, and Search Console's Not Found count trends down.
