Title tag
The clickable headline in search results and the text in the browser tab. It is separate from the H1 on the page.
Why it matters
It is the single biggest influence on whether someone clicks. Too long and it is cut off mid-word; too vague and it loses to the result beside it.
How to fix it, step by step
Quick fix — usually under ten minutes, no developer needed.
- 1Aim for 50–60 characters. Beyond that it is truncated.
- 2Put the important words first — people scan the beginning.
- 3Include the thing being searched for and, for local businesses, the place.
- 4In WordPress, set it in the Yoast or Rank Math box below the editor. Leave it blank and the theme guesses.
How to know it worked
Search for your page and read the headline in the result. It should be complete, not ending in an ellipsis.
