llms.txt
A newer convention — a plain text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that describes your business and your key pages specifically for AI assistants, in the way robots.txt speaks to search crawlers.
Why it matters
AI assistants summarise a site in a sentence or two. Left to guess, they guess from whatever text they happened to read. This file is your chance to state plainly what you do, who you serve and which pages matter.
How to fix it, step by step
Quick fix — usually under ten minutes, no developer needed.
- 1Create a plain text file named llms.txt at the root of your site.
- 2Start with a single "# " heading naming your business.
- 3Write two or three sentences saying exactly what you do and who for. Plain language, no marketing adjectives — this is for a machine to quote.
- 4List your most important pages as markdown links, each with a short description of what is on it.
- 5Upload it so it is reachable at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
How to know it worked
The file loads in a browser at that exact address and returns plain text, not a 404 page.
