A short written description of what an image shows, read aloud by screen readers and read by machines that cannot see it.
Why it matters
It is an accessibility requirement, it is how images rank in image search, and it is the only way an AI assistant knows what your photographs contain.
How to fix it, step by step
Quick fix — usually under ten minutes, no developer needed.
- 1Describe what is in the image, plainly. "Engineer replacing a boiler valve" — not "boiler1.jpg".
- 2In WordPress, set it in the Media Library or the image block sidebar.
- 3Leave alt empty for purely decorative images so screen readers skip them.
- 4Do not stuff keywords; describe the picture.
How to know it worked
